From the Parsonage...

I have to admit that 2020 has been a bit challenging so

far!  It started off pretty well.  The country was doing great as

far as the economy; jobs were plentiful, wages were high, and

interest rates were low.  Likewise, our church seemed to be

happy and healthy, with fairly steady attendance and a few

new people who had started attending.  Unfortunately, to the

detriment of all involved, politics reared its ugly head in this

election year, and the animosity between the two parties resulted in an attempt to impeach the sitting President that took over every minute of our news media.  Then everything suddenly came to a complete stop!

A new virus hit the people in China and quickly spread throughout the world!  The fear caused by this virus resulted in the almost total shutdown of schools, businesses, churches, and social activities, as well as our economy.  We became an “indoor” nation, with everyone except those classified as “essential” sheltering at home!  We operated under government restrictions that affected every facet of our lives, whether we agreed with them or not.  It soon turned into a divisive issue as people argued about how much they believed and how they chose to behave.

As if that wasn’t enough for one year, we then experienced a real setback in race relations due to the death of a man at the hands of the police.  Videos of the actions of the officers involved flooded the media, and the entire nation was appalled at what had happened.  Unfortunately, several demonstrations by Black Lives Matter groups ended up in riots, violence, and damage in several cities.  This was fueled by some additional cases of apparent police brutality and mismanagement against blacks, and more protests broke out, often accompanied by violent acts that further served to antagonize and divide our country.

During all this upheaval, we’ve seen individual and political opinions pit friend against friend, neighbor against neighbor, and even family member against family member!  Instead of growing calmer, tempers are flaring, and the situation seems to be escalating, as people on both sides try to prove their points.  Indeed, you can’t help wondering if the end is near as you look at the signs around us and read the Book of Revelation.

So do we just give up…or is there still hope?  When you look at the Bible, you see many times when God’s people faced trials and tribulations that went on and on.  The solution always came when they turned back to Him, repented of their sins, and asked for His forgiveness.  Maybe we should try that and see what happens!

Blessings,

Dona
