Dear Lighthouse Congregation,

I recently read "Marks of a Movement" by Winfield Bevins, which explores the Wesleyan Revival and its relevance to modern church renewal. The book emphasizes that the mission of the church remains unchanged, and past renewal movements offer valuable lessons for today. Bevins argues that understanding historical movements like the Wesleyan Revival can guide us in addressing contemporary challenges.
John Wesley's goal was to bring spiritual renewal to the Church of England by revitalizing early Christian doctrines and practices. His disciple-making movement empowered many to join God's mission. Bevins highlights that true renewal requires more than modern church growth theories; it needs a return to foundational truths and a spark of revival energy.
Bevins also notes that movements are marked by rediscovery and unity of purpose, though Methodism faced internal divisions. He cautions that studying past movements is not a silver bullet but can provide insights into today's complex world. Renewal requires a spark and each of us can be that spark.
I hope this critique piques your interest in church renewal. Bevins' work, though academic, offers practical advice for our journey together. Over the next year I hope we will embrace the call to renewal and revitalization not only of Lighthouse Church and the Global Methodist denomination but Christianity worldwide.
God Bless,
Pastor Eric
